Unlike an emergency kit meant for hunkering down at home, bug out bags (also called go bags) are a much more portable version, designed to be grabbed and taken with you in the event of an evacuation. Bug out bags are essentially backpacks with enough emergency supplies to last three days, allowing you to leave immediately and, when curated correctly, ensuring you’re as prepared as possible to face disaster-related challenges.

Since you may not have access to drinking water, food, power or communication devices until you reach help in a crisis, a bug out bag is one of the cornerstones of emergency preparedness. While you can assemble your own based on recommendations by FEMA, the Red Cross and Ready.gov, you can also purchase premade versions stocked with various supplies. You’ll still need to add personal items like important documents, prescription medications and local maps, as well as other essentials, but they can provide a quality head start.
