Location: Marion, VA

Based along the Appalachian Trail, Marion Outdoors is an outfitter of curated cottage brand gear, clothing, and wide-toe-box hiking shoes. A Hiker Hostel, The Merry Inn, is located above the shop, where Appalachian Trail thru-hikers and section hikers rest, shower, wash their clothes and resupply before hiking on.

Coach, the owner, was dubbed “The Willy Wonka of the Backpacking and Hiking World” by his followers. He makes Outdoor Gear Reviews and tips videos that are as entertaining as they are educational, which can be found at the links above.

“Being a local small business means bringing more people into our small town and giving them an experience they’ll never forget. I love that we’ve created a community that supports each other helps inspire people to get outside. I consider my business locally owned but also a family business. As soon as my kids are old enough I’m putting them to work!”

Location: Pinellas Park, FL

A brick-and-mortar business based in Pinellas Park, Bill Jackson’s has been providing products and services to the Florida outdoor community for over 80 years. Family and veteran owned, Bill Jackson's began with Bill and Harriet Jackson in 1946 selling army surplus out of their garage in St. Petersburg, FL. Over the next several years they moved into a building and the inventory morphed into work clothes, fishing tackle and camping supplies.

“We pride ourselves on providing the Usual and Unusual for the great outdoors, backed by a team of avid adventurers who actually use the gear we sell.”
“But we offer far more than just products; we are a full-scale instructional destination.”

"You can get scuba certified in our heated indoor pool, take a ski lesson on our indoor slope, or test out kayaks, paddleboards, and fly rods right in our backyard on Freedom Lake. From hosting expert hiking clinics—like our upcoming July session on conquering Machu Picchu—to offering a premier indoor shooting range with certified firearm classes, we don’t just sell the outdoor lifestyle. We teach it.”

“To us, being locally owned means more than just a physical address; it’s about the deep privilege of sharing our love for the outdoors with generation after generation of local families who have made us a part of their adventures. We are deeply grateful for the love this community shows us, and we strive to give it right back every single day.”

Located just outside of downtown Asheville in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, Second Gear WNC offers a truly unique buying experience for anyone lucky enough to pay a visit in person.
“Our business has been locally owned for 22 years, and it has always remained a business built by community, for our community. In fact, 80% of our store inventory consists of gently used second-hand gear and apparel consigned by our own WNC local community members, so the store only exists because of them.”

“It's a sustainable circular economy that saves thousands of pounds of gear from landfills and has become a way of life for many in this area -- most everyone could brag about their favorite find at Second Gear. After 22 years our consignors have made over a million in cash or store credit payouts on gear they no longer need or use, and that many more people have found the gear they need at a fraction of the cost.”
“That sounds like we're keeping it pretty local to us!”

Anyone curious or excited about exploring the outdoors is welcome at Second Gear! You don't need expensive or fancy gear to enjoy going outside, just need a sense of adventure -- and probably some really good sunscreen. Online ordering is also available, but for local pick-up only.

Location: Saint Paul, MN (sales online)

Based in Saint Paul, MN, Garage Grown Gear is an online retailer, accessible by people around the world 24/7 to shop all of their ultralight backpacking needs. With over 300+ brands in stock, GGG has an emphasis on small and cottage brands and the unique gear they bring to the table.

“When ultralight backpacking was first emerging, people were making their own minimalist gear from scratch to get their pack weight down. Now ultralight has become super popular, and we find the small brands born out of the MYOG (Make Your Own Gear) movement still hold the most ingenuity and innovation.”
“Plus, small businesses are the backbone of the outdoor community at large as they’re run by the people who are actually going outside and hitting the trail.”

“While buying the latest ultralight gear is really cool, knowing how to best use the gear you already have is such an important skill, or philosophy, even. Knowing how to maintain your gear, repair it, clean it, customize it in different settings, and even repurposing it will only enhance your relationship to it and the outdoors, while also keeping materials out of landfills or necessitating new gear to be constantly made.”

Location: Fayetteville, AR

Pack Rat Outdoor Center was founded in 1973 by Scott and Carolyn Crook, who began by selling Grumman canoes out of their garage. Carolyn still owns and operates the business on a daily basis, alongside her two partners, Rick Spicer and Kevin Fendley!
While they do run a small online shop, Pack Rat has first and foremost always been a physical, brick & mortar shop where customers can try things on, get their hands on products, and ask staff for advice, whether it’s what trail to hike, or what gear they need (or don’t need) for their next trip.

They have had many homes over the years, from garages to small buildings, to their current location in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
“In 2001-2002 we constructed a custom-built, 15k square foot log cabin out of standing timber from a forest fire in Montana.”

Pack Rat’s niche is primarily focusing on educating and outfitting our community for hiking, climbing, and paddling excursions. But Pack Rat is more than just an outfitter: they host skill clinics, fundraing events for local outdoor nonprofits, and even an annual event called the Brewha Bushwhack, where teams compete in survival and outdoor skills-based challenges.
