जेफ प्रशांत नॉर्थवेस्ट में अपने परिवार के साथ बैकपैकिंग में बड़े हुए। यह अल्ट्रालाइट बैकपैकिंग से बहुत दूर था, लेकिन प्रत्येक 50 पाउंड लोड हो रहा था और सप्ताहांत के लिए मछली और शिविर के लिए झील में 3 मील की लंबी पैदल यात्रा कर रहा था। 2 साल की उम्र में जेफ को इन यात्राओं में से एक पर जिआर्डिया मिला, और दूसरे पर उसके पास इतने सारे मच्छर काटने थे कि डेकेयर ने सोचा कि उसे चिकनपॉक्स है।
